(Black) Friday Films
It must be about winter because the Friday films returns for at least one week. This time of year we are always graced with a bevy of new films. Every year's selection of footage helps to pass the time during our long, cold winter days and give us a break from the hours of restocking the fly boxes. Enjoy.

Friday Films - Spring Break Edition
The Friday Films is back from it's spring sabbatical and ready for another run! Today marks the beginning of many local area school spring breaks. In honor of the event here, are a few spring break themed fishing videos.
In no particular order. Enjoy the work of Montana Wild and Strip'n Flywear over at the Missouri (which is where I will be headed in a few days). Spring fishing highlights from Big Sky Trouting (which is what I will be doing in about 6 hours), and some other tasty Montana fishing footage courtesy of Yukon Goes Fishing.

Friday Films - Harlem Shake, Fly Fishing Edition
Wow it's Friday already? That week went fast.
This weeks edition brings us some humor from the fly fishing world with a few fishy renditions of the Dance/You Tube craze, the Harlem Shake.
If you haven't heard about the ever increasingly popular Harlem Shake then you either A: Live in a cave, or some similar place removed from society. B: Have an actually useful, busy and productive life. C: Spend too much time fishing to care about such trivial things. Or D: All of the above.
Hope these make you chuckle. Enjoy

Friday Films - Random Edition
The title says it all.
Nothing cohesive about this one. Just a bunch of seemingly unrelated fishy films. On the docket we have Hank Patterson's first foray into the world of fly tying. Next up, "Cold Blue Nights" from The Fly Collective. This is a tasty collaboration of Ivan Orsic of Yukon Goes Fishing fame, and Russ Schnitzer of Schnitzer Photo. Next comes is the amazing trailer "Wild Reverence" by North Fork Studios discussing the plight wild steelhead. Finally, a nice segment from some boys from the eastern side of the country. "Constant" by PA Undercurrent Outfitters.
Enjoy.

Friday Films - Simms + RA Beattie Edition
Barely was able to sneak in a Friday Films for this week but never fear, it's here. Things are getting busy around Western Montana. The fishing is slowly but surely turning on and plans are already set for some weekend floating.
If you search on YouTube for either Simms Fishing and/or RA Beattie you come up with some stellar films. RA Beattie is one of the best in the business at making fly fishing look just plain awesome so enjoy the goods.
Just a hint. I saved the best for last.

Friday Films - Great White North Edition
When you enter the words "Canada" and "Fly Fishing" into the search engine, you expect to find some great things. I was certainly not disappointed as this week's films are all particularly good if I say so myself.
Our neighbors to the north certainly have some great rivers and fish to boot. Definitely makes me want to load up the silver bullet (my '93 Subaru wagon) and head towards the arctic circle. At least in Canada I can get a bag of Lays all dressed flavored chips. If you have never had a bag of these miracles, I tell you what, you can't begin to imagine what you're are missing out on. Why they don't sell these in the states, I'll never know.
My potato chip obsession aside. This week we have great stuff from the Elk River Watershed, big bullies and cuts chomping dries. Quality material from Faceless Fly Fishing. Bow River action from Dub a Fly. Jumbo sized bull trout from the very Humblefisherman. And the icing on Lord Stanley's Cup, a remarkable film from Andrew Hardingham. A story of cane rods, family, and one of the grandest fish that swims, the steelhead.
Hope you enjoy. I think I'm going watch my old VHS copy of Strange Brew and then crank up some classic Brian Adams.
Much love Canada, keep it comin'.

Friday Films - Treasure State Edition
It's a little bit annoying trying to type with one hand. I had the great pleasure of breaking the pinky on my casting hand this week.
Long story short, I'd better work on casting left handed. And I'm not going to type much more than this, sorry, ain't gonna happen.
Today, films from the Treasure State. Big Sky Country. My home.
Montana.
Montana Stories: Jenny Grossenbacher from Montana Office of Tourism on Vimeo.
Down & Across from scumliner media on Vimeo.
Circle 3 Spring Creek from Todd Moen Creative on Vimeo.
King of the Herd from Yukon Goes Fishing on Vimeo.
Fall in Big Sky Country from Lone Peak Outfitters on Vimeo.

Friday Films - Somewhere Warm Edition
So after a week of below average temps, the river is decidedly looking more like a solid than a liquid. Now if you happened to see last weeks edition of Friday Films you'll know that I usually don't mind the winter fishing game.
Though I guess we all have days we'd prefer to be on a beach somewhere. Especially on a dark January day. Here's to dreaming.
This week, fly fishing footage from a few decidedly warmer environs. Christmas Island GT by Ben Marlow, Florida tarpon with Waterline Media, and then a little bit of everything with World Angling.
Enjoy

Riding High: A Season on the Fly from Waterline Media on Vimeo.

Friday Films - Winter Pursuits
It's January. As I write this, snow is lightly falling and the mercury tells me it's about 15 degrees out. Typical winter day in Montana, and I love it.
Winter is the season that most folks hang up the waders and patiently wait for spring. Around here that means Skwala season and dry flies. For the person that can't go more than a few days without being near moving water. Winter - frozen fingers, shelf ice, and everything else that goes with it is merely an inconvenience.
Winter fishing also has it's own simple joys. For starters you are usually alone. It's quiet. And in Montana, winter has a stark beauty that at times can be truly breathtaking. This weeks edition of Friday Films brings in some footage that hopefully highlight the soul of the winter fishing season.

Friday Films - Mighty Mo' Edition
The Missouri river is a special place as anyone who has fished it will tell you. We all know there are lots of fish, and big ones to boot, but part of the Mo's allure to me at least has to be the people. Craig, MT has to be one of the few places on earth that smelly, unshaven, dirt poor trout bums can truly feel at home. Whenever I spend a few days in Craig I always come away with a few new friends, and a couple good stories. You can't beat the culture, especially in the winter, when the only people in town are either locals, hardcore trout bums, or both.
Whether you're standing around a good fire at the Craig campground, swapping stories with a bunch of likeminded fly fishermen, sampling the fine cuisine and nightlife at Joe's, or pounding coffee during the morning's ritualistic visit to Headhunters, you always run into lots of friendly, interesting, and sometimes straight up crazy folks.
An impending trip to the Mo' got me in the mood to dig up some of my favorite videos on the river. First up, Spring Training by the crew at Headhunters Fly Shop. Besides serving as the cultural and spiritual hub of Craig, these guys put out more than a few good articles, videos, and tips on how to fish the Missouri. They tell it like it is, and are eager to help you catch fish, I appreciate that.
Spring Training from scumliner media on Vimeo.
Next up we have the trailer from Shartail Media's fantastic film Sipping Dry. This video highlights the big reasons why we love the Mo.
Last but not least we have a film by 406 Productions. Plenty of big fish footage for all.

Friday Films
Here's a look at some films that caught my eye this week.
It seems like the entire fly fishing world has been talking about the film Low and Clear from Finback Films. But in case you haven't got a chance to check out the trailer, here it is. Looks awesome.
Next up comes a short piece from our friends at Simms about summertime hopper fishing in Montana. For some reason I just can't get enough of watching big trout crushing hoppers. How many months until August? It can never get here fast enough.
Last but certainly not least we have some great footage from Carp whisperer Barry Reynolds. Those who know me, also know I have a soft spot for carp. Reynolds wrote the book on fly fishing for carp (literally, it's called Carp on the Fly) and knows a thing or two about catching the golden bonefish. The music certainly helps the awesomeness of this film, you'll see what I mean.
